The Definition

What Outbound Training Actually Is

Outbound training (OBT) is experiential corporate learning conducted outdoors, where teams complete physical challenge activities and then work through a structured, facilitated debrief. The activity generates genuine behaviour under mild pressure. The debrief converts that behaviour into insight participants can actually apply on Monday morning.

That second half is what separates outbound training from a team outing. A team outing is designed for enjoyment and produces goodwill that fades in a fortnight. In outbound training, the activity is only the data-gathering exercise — the learning happens when a skilled facilitator helps the team examine how they communicated, who took charge, who went quiet, and what that means for how they operate at work.

Without the debrief, an outbound programme is just an expensive picnic.

Bija Training has been running these programmes since 2012 for automotive teams, sales forces, leadership cohorts and cross-functional product teams across India — over 100 organisations to date.

The Programme

Our Core Outbound Activities

Each activity is selected to target a specific team dynamic — never for spectacle alone. Here is what each one actually surfaces.

🌉

Burma Bridge

A rope bridge crossing at height. Surfaces how a team supports a member who is genuinely afraid — and whether encouragement or pressure is the default culture.

Trust · Psychological Safety
🔥

Fire Walk

A supervised walk across hot embers. Confronts the gap between perceived risk and actual risk — the most useful reframe for teams paralysed by fear of failure.

Limiting Beliefs · Courage
💣

Mine Field

Blindfolded navigation guided only by teammates' voices. Ruthlessly exposes communication quality — vague instructions produce immediate, visible failure.

Clarity · Instruction Giving
🔧

Pipe Tran

Transporting an object across distance using only interlocking pipe segments. A pure test of planning versus improvisation, and of whether the team pauses to strategise.

Planning · Coordination
🧗

Foxden Climb

A vertical climb with belay support. Reveals individual response to sustained difficulty and how the group behaves toward its slowest member.

Resilience · Inclusion
💬

Structured Debrief

The part that matters. A certified facilitator walks the team through what happened, why, and what specifically changes at work — ending in written commitments.

How a Two-Day Outbound Programme Runs

Every programme is customised after a diagnostic conversation, but this is the shape most two-day engagements take.

  1. Pre-programme diagnostic (1–2 weeks before). A call with the HR sponsor and the business leader to identify the actual behavioural problem, plus a short pre-assessment of participants. This is what makes the activity selection meaningful rather than generic.
  2. Day 1 morning — framing and low-element activities. Ground rules, safety briefing, then ground-based challenges (Mine Field, Pipe Tran) that get teams collaborating and generate early behavioural data.
  3. Day 1 afternoon — first structured debrief. The team unpacks patterns observed in the morning. Usually the first uncomfortable realisation lands here.
  4. Day 2 morning — high elements. Burma Bridge, Foxden, Fire Walk. Higher perceived stakes, deeper responses, more honest behaviour.
  5. Day 2 afternoon — synthesis and commitments. Each participant writes specific, dated commitments about what they will do differently. Their manager receives a copy.
  6. 30/60/90-day follow-up. Structured check-ins to verify the behaviour actually stuck. This step is skipped by most providers and is the main reason outbound training gets a reputation for not lasting.
Fit Assessment

Is Outbound Training Right for Your Team?

✅ Strong fit when…

  • A newly merged or newly formed team needs to build trust fast
  • Silos between functions are blocking delivery
  • People are technically capable but don't communicate under pressure
  • A leadership cohort needs to see itself behave, not just discuss behaviour
  • Remote or distributed teams have never met physically

⚠️ Poor fit when…

  • The real problem is a specific knowledge gap — use classroom training
  • There is active, unresolved interpersonal conflict that needs mediation first
  • Leadership won't participate alongside the team
  • The budget covers the activity but not the follow-up
  • It's being bought as a year-end reward rather than a development intervention

We will tell you honestly if your situation falls in the right-hand column. A programme sold into the wrong problem damages our credibility more than the lost engagement is worth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Outbound Training Questions

What is outbound training in a corporate context?

Outbound training (OBT) is experiential corporate learning conducted outdoors, where teams complete physical challenge activities and then work through a structured facilitated debrief. The activity generates real behaviour under mild pressure; the debrief converts that behaviour into insight participants can apply at work. It differs from a recreational team outing because every activity is chosen to target a specific team dynamic and is followed by structured reflection.

How much does outbound training cost in India?

Bija Training's outbound programs start from ₹35,000 per day, which covers certified facilitators and full activity setup. Final pricing depends on group size, programme duration, venue and travel. Venue and accommodation are typically billed separately or arranged by the client. Contact us for a detailed quote for your team.

How many people can attend one outbound training program?

We run outbound programs for groups of 20 to 50 participants per batch, and can scale to multiple parallel batches for larger enterprise rollouts of 200 to 500 employees. Groups larger than 50 are split into sub-teams so every participant gets facilitator attention during the debrief — which is where the actual learning happens.

Where does Bija Training deliver outbound programs?

We are headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, with a second office in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and deliver outbound training PAN India — including Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi NCR, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Coimbatore. Programs run at client-selected resorts, dedicated outbound campuses, or client-owned facilities.

Is outbound training safe?

Yes. All high-element activities such as Burma Bridge and Foxden use redundant safety systems with certified harnesses, belay ropes and trained safety personnel at every station. Participation in any individual activity is always voluntary — participants who opt out remain fully involved in planning and debrief roles, which preserves the learning value for them.

How is outbound training different from a team outing?

A team outing is designed for enjoyment and produces goodwill that fades within weeks. Outbound training uses activities purely as data-gathering exercises: the real work happens in the facilitated debrief afterwards, where a trained facilitator helps the team examine how they communicated, decided and led under pressure, then commit to specific changes at work. Without the debrief, an outbound programme is just an outing.

What should participants bring?

Comfortable sports clothing, closed-toe shoes with grip, a hat, sunscreen and a reusable water bottle. We send a detailed participant brief a week before the programme. Participants with medical conditions, recent injuries or pregnancy should inform us in advance so we can adapt their role — nobody is excluded, but we plan around it properly.
